When should my first visit be to see a gynecologist?

Adolescent girls should first visit an obstetrician/gynecologist between the ages of 13-15. Some cases might call for a visit earlier based on concerns of the parent.  Care should be delivered according to the patient's individual stage of physicial, sexual and psychological development.

What does the initial visit cover?

The initial visit  generally does not include a pelvic examination.  A pelvic examination would be performed when indicated by the medical history.  If the patient has had sexual intercourse, screening for sexually transmitted dieases would also be appropriate.  Lastly, the patient should have her first pap test at 21 years of age.
